Two years after becoming a registered charity, Sherborne’s Food Bank continues to care for a growing number of individuals and families in the community who have a short-term food crisis. Typically it delivers to up to twenty households each week, all of whom are referred by recognised health and social care agencies including the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Magna Money Matters Service, schools, GP surgeries, hospitals, The Rendezvous, children’s centres and local churches. In 2015 a total of 994 weekly food parcels were provided by Sherborne Food Bank: 350 for single adults, 262 for adult couples (or small families), 347 for families and 35 via agency collection. Referrals are made typically for a three week duration but a significant minority are longer-term.

During June the food bank is making two appeals. The first is to people of all ages who are experiencing a food crisis and need a helping hand for up to six weeks. The food bank is generously supported with food donations and by its supporters including Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. It has the means to help but encourages people to come forward without fear of judgement or complicated procedures. If you are in need please contact any of the recommended referrers, or simply visit Sherborne CAB for advice. Sherborne Food Bank is unique because it delivers direct to recipients, reaching out to those without transport and who may be living in rural locations – an explanatory leaflet with contact details is available at www.sherbornefoodbank.org

The second appeal is for more volunteers to help the food bank make the journey from supermarket shelf to kitchen cupboard. Volunteer tasks include collecting from various donation points in Sherborne, stacking and sorting at the Longburton depot on Wednesday mornings then packing the food parcels later that afternoon, and delivering to households on Fridays. Some volunteers are able to offer help on a weekly basis, others get involved on a less frequent rota basis. Full training and supervision is provided for this rewarding opportunity to help those in need. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help with the work of this vital local charity please contact Sherborne Food Bank on 07854 163869 or email hello@sherbornefoodbank.org for more information.
